Te Toi o Ngā Rangatahi means “the summit of young people”. This funding is about rangatahi-led projects, programmes and building rangatahi-led organisations. Only rangatahi can apply for this funding.
Our name for this funding comes from the pūrākau about Tāne’s journey to the twelve heavens. At Toi-ō-ngā-rangi, the summit of the heavens, Tane was welcomed by Io, the supreme power and received three kete of knowledge.
First up, in Toi-ō-ngā-rangi, Tāne went to the Mātangireia whare to consult with Io about the three kete of knowledge. Mātangireia funding is for rangatahi who want to run a project in their community.
Next, Tāne went to the Rangiātea whare, the treasure house. Here, he was gifted the three kete of knowledge by Io. After that, Tane returned back to Te Ao Tūroa – the earthly world, sea and sky. Rangiātea funding is for rangatahi who have already run projects for rangatahi in their community and want to run programmes over a longer time.
Wharekura is the name of the first whare wānanga built by the atua to house the three kete of knowledge and share this knowledge to people on earth once Tāne returned from the heavens to Te Ao Tūroa. This funding is to help build rangatahi led organisations doing great things for rangatahi in their community. Wharekura funding is for rangatahi who have already doing mahi for rangatahi and are ready to create their own organisation.

As a rōpū, we have found in some of the rangatahi-led projects we have funded, that rangatahi have felt well meaning adults have taken on an ‘in charge’ role over their projects. We wanted to make a statement about this as we believe in the power of rangatahi-led mahi and thought we better explain what we meant by rangatahi-led.
Rangatahi-led means projects developed and delivered by rangatahi. In a rangatahi-led project, rangatahi come up with the idea, they own and shape the project from beginning to end.
For a project to be rangatahi-led, rangatahi need to be the boss of their own projects. Rangatahi may choose to ask adults for their advice or help. Adults should only be in support roles when rangatahi request them.
