Ahi Mahana - Wairoa opens its own Curtain Bank

Through the wonderful collaboration of Te Whatu Ora—Child Healthy Homes programme, Health NZ, Wharariki Trust, Genesis Energy, and ECCT, a great solution was developed to help solve an issue in Wairoa. Ahi Mahana, the Wairoa Curtain Bank, was opened in mid-2024.

Wairoa is a community that faces high deprivation and hardship, and issues have been compounded by Cyclone Gabrielle and subsequent flooding events.  Many families live in damp and cold homes, causing severe health issues such as respiratory or skin conditions. Simple remedies such as providing good, lined curtains can reduce heat loss through poorly insulated homes. Napier curtain bank previously supported the community of Wairoa, however, following the Cyclone the demand on this service grew substantially and a more localised solution was required.

The Child Healthy Housing supported the purchase of an industrial overlocker and sewing machine, and general sewing items like scissors and rulers. Health New Zealand provided an ideal space at Wairoa Hospital, where the curtain bank is now based, at no cost and furthermore, donated shelving. ECCT and Genesis Energy contributed towards operational costs. Wharariki Trust has been the wonderful coordinator and fund holder for this very worthwhile Community Project.

An amazing group of volunteers have been running Ahi Mahana and, to date, over 50 sets of curtains have been provided to 40 homes. The families are grateful for the warmth that theses curtains provide and feel their children have had better health over winter as a result.

This initiative strongly aligns with all of ECCT’s Priority Communities, and the Mana Taurite and Hononga Pou.

Wharariki Trust is a charity working with local Hawke's Bay whānau and partners to support wellness, resilience and hope.
