January 2024 saw the start of a new relationship with Orange Sky, an organisation working across Aotearoa since 2018, to provide people experiencing homelessness and hardship with access to free laundry services, warm showers, and genuine, non-judgmental conversation.
ECCT supported the co-funding of a new laundry van for Hawkes Bay / Te Matau a Maui after community consultation identified this as a need. This is the sixth van in Aotearoa, and it will work across the communities of Hastings, Napier and Flaxmere, among others.
Access to free laundry services will help raise health standards for those experiencing disadvantage. The van’s facilities are solar powered, making it both efficient and sustainable. Orange Sky works closely with other service providers that offer wraparound services for the community, such as foodbanks and housing services. The dedicated team of volunteers who help run the service are able to develop trusting relationships, thereby providing real connections with its clients.
Kat Doughty, Senior Impact Manager noted “Launching our service in Te Matau a Māui is more than just providing a laundry service—it's a strategic collaboration with local government and community providers to directly impact those facing significant challenges. By addressing the practical need for clean clothes, we're contributing to a broader effort to support and uplift individuals and whanau in the community facing hardship.
Orange Sky’s kaupapa is to positively connect communities by providing a safe space for people doing it tough to access clean laundry, and genuine kōrero. Orange Sky's vision is to create a community where everyone feels valued, regardless of their circumstances. With the support of ECCT, we aim to achieve this and more."
The grant supports a programme that serves individuals facing hardship and aligns with our Equity and Partnerships Pou. The van facilities are powered by solar so aligns with the Kaitiakitanga Pou.
