Trustees & Staff visit with Tararua Community Youth Services Inc

ECCT held its July Board meeting in Dannevirke and during the visit, Trustees and staff took the opportunity to meet one of the groups currently supported through TiraRangatahi, the rōpu leading the Rangatahi Action Plan. Tararua Community Youth Services Inc (TCYS) is one of six Pouaarahi Champion Organisations supported under the Champion Rangatahi Development Fund and who will benefit from a multi-year funding partnership.

TCYS provides support and advocacy to youth from 11 to 24 years. They offer specialist programmes; life skills, camps, education, training and mentoring to build self-esteem and resilience. As they so eloquently phrased it “We’re a youth work organisation, we’re very much about being holistic, very much about community and the local people in our community”. Their purpose is “All young people of Tamariki nui a Rua will be healthy, have opportunities and strive towards success no matter the circumstances”. The programme currently being supported is Guys 4 Guys.

Rangatahi are involved in the organisation at all levels and completely valued throughout the organisation, its framework and delivery of programmes. Rangatahi seek a position, programme, place of which they feel comfortable as a starting point and this navigates the beginning of their development for which Youth Workers & Mentors work alongside – ensuring their special place within the organisation is guided, developed, and strengthened. When meeting with several members of TCYS and hearing their stories, it was plain to see these values being carried out.

The ECCT team engaged with several team members, enjoyed a tour of the facilities and shared kai with the team. It was a heartwarming meeting and the ECCT team look forward to the continued partnership with this organisation doing inspirational mahi in our rohe.
